Default 140 speedo install wtf

ok so i bought a 87-89 140mph speedo for $50 off this kid i kno from the car meets around here. how easy is this to do? it doesnt look that hard but i could be wrong. is there n e thing i shood look out for while im doin it?

ive seen a pic somewhere that shows how the dash comes apart but idk where to find that.

any advice/pictures/links to other threads would be helpful (tried the search thing but i cant seem to find n e thing)

It is a straight forward swap, there are 4 screws to take out for the bezel over the speedo, the steering column cover and I think 4 more screws for the speedo as well. The light switch, hazard switch and defrost can be a bit tricky. The toughest part for me to disconnect was the speedo cable. The connections for the wires to the other guages are easy to disconnect as well.

um ok so i hooked it up but and everything works except the actual mph gauge... it works when i spin it with my hand just not when its hooked up to the car.. im confused now.. anyone have n e suggestions?

Make sure it is snap in all the way, and make sure that the gear at the tranny is connected to the speedo cable as well.

it clipped in.. ill check where it connects to the tranny.. could it have pulled out when i pulled on the cable?

Yes it could have, mine did the same thing to me. I had to restab the metal shaft into the speedo gear.

wellthat cable looks pretty secure on the tranny but should i undo it and try re stabing it?

but the little square part in the cable still turns.... clockwise

im so confused... i put the original one back on and it worked... but if i spin the back of both of them at the same rate the read the same mph but the cable wont seem turn the new one for some reason.. WTF!!![:@]

Maybe the new, used speedo is broken. I know that when I did mine it worked great after I got the speedo cable pushed in all the way.
