5.0L (1979-1995) MustangTechnical discussions on 5.0 Liter Mustangs within. This does not include the 5.0 from the 2011 Mustang GT. That information is in the 2005-1011 section.
the only difference between a c4 and c5 is just the internals?
Yes. If the tags are missing or whatever, the C4 has a filter with the valve body, a C5 will have what looks like 2 valve bodys one on top of the other along with the filter. The C4 was used from 64 to 82 and then replaced by the C5 which in turn was replaced in 86 by the AOD*. The C3 was basically a light duty C4 used from 74 to 86. The C3, C4, and C5 have a seperate bell. The AOD has the bell and case cast as one piece, and as My77stang stated, the C6 bell and case are cast as one piece also.
*A sidenote on the AOD. The AOD didnt show up until about 84 in the Mustang with the EFI 5.0 motors. An AOD has 'Automatic Overdrive Metric' stamped onto the pan. Easy to spot.
