Where to find casting numbers?

Hello All-

I was told that my 86 Mustang had a cobra crate motor. The intake is a cobra intake, but a friend of the guy who sold it to me said that the engine is out of a mercury and just has the intake on it. Where are the casting numbers on this motor? And, even if I find the numbers, doesnt ford re-use blocks for the crate motors? So how good would this represent the engine. Is there any other ways to verify that its a Cobra other then dyno-ing it. It seems like it has more power than a regular 5.0, but do you guys have any ideas?

Thanks!

RE: Where to find casting numbers?

u probably have just the cobra intake! its VERY common for a simple aftermarket manifold upgrader. as for the casting members...... ur guess is as good as mine.lol I did hear from muscle mustangs and fast fords that ford does re-use blocks for the crates though! the '93 cobra engine, believe it or not, only made about 20 more hp than the stock 225hp. but a WHOLE LOT MORE TORQUE! with ur mods, ur prob. equivelent to a cobra, that is if u dont have the entire cobra block. the only way to find out is dyno, or on the block, there should be a vin# to match the car.......look for it!

RE: Where to find casting numbers?

thanks for the help. I was kind of afraid that dynoing would be the only real option. I have a lot of plans for upgrades to the suspension, and possibly a cam/lifter combo, so maybe after all of that I will run it on a dyno and see what i can pull.
