Here's a good question on rear brake drums.
I will be redoing my back brakes in the next few days with all raybestos PG stuff, but here is my question...
The same brake shoes seem to fit all 79-93's, and the hardware kits are the same,
but the actual drums are for either an A/T or a M/T. Why is this?
Also the ones that list for an A/T are flared drums and the M/T ones are finned, but the ones I currently have are flared with the part number E9ZC and I have a M/T.

I want to stick with the flared as I don't really care for the finned...




Anyone that can shed some light is welcome....

Not sure why they would list them as A/T and M/T they all use the same brakes. The ones with fins Ihave always been told cool better. The only real differance in drums I have read about where the ones that where aluminum with a steel liner that where used for a short time. My original brakes for my 87 where the flaired ones not finned and mine is a factory 5spd

The thing is I dont think the flared ones are aluminum because mine were completely rusted when I got the car. I cleaned them and painted them...



Also I have seen finned ones that are rusted as well... ???

The ones on my 02 Ranger have to be the aluminum type because with 145K miles on them they are still grey with no rust.

Fitty not sure about the 02 Ranger but I think it was some of the early Fox's that had them. When I get home in oh... about 2 hours I'll look it up real quick in my referance stuff and let yeah know what I find.

OK from 1979 - 83 some NON-V8 mustangs had aluminum drums with cast iron liners. The 79 turbocharged mustangs came standard with them. They used the same 9.0 x 1.73 brake shoes.

The 15 year run of the fox (except for the 93 cobras) used the same Pinto/Mustang II based rear drum brakes. (yes pinto!)

just curious how much your spending on new drums. last time i had my car into a brake place they said both drums were shot and that it would $200 in parts plus labor. this was before i knew jack about my car. here i am years later and finally im getting around to fixing my rear brakes lol. anyways, i got a compete disc brake convesion kit for $400. maybe this is a better route for you. drum brakes suck!

I hope the disc brake conversion is 5 lugs as it offers alot more wheel choices....

its not, i went with a 4 lug kit because i have 3 sets of wheels for my car and moser 31 spline axles. im not about to buy 3 sets of wheels and new axles just so i can have 1 more lug[&:]
