Ever had a shifter mechanism off the trans? I feel no detents or notchiness (is that a word?).
The detent action comes from the transmission.
You hear the odd complaint of notchiness after switching to an aftermarket shifter. My guess is the notchiness is always there. It's just amplified when you are trying to shift with a shorter handle.
I have a Dodge Ram also. It has a NV3500 5 spd. The shifter handle is about 18" long. You can literally pull it into any gear with the end of your baby finger.
