Default How do you "Pull Codes"....

I'm having an idle problem....sometimes it will just start idling at 1800 by itself, then a few minutes later it will come back down when I stop again. I think it's MOSTLY happening when the engine is already warmed up, but it happens at different times. I know it can be a few things...IAC, TPS etc....however I was just curious how do I pull codes? Do I need the Code reader thing (lol)....and any ideas on my problem?

Also today when I was driving it started to shake a bit, like it was missing, and the rpm's were going up and down!! then 2mins later I took it around the block and it idles good and didn't shake at all....weird.

Also on cold starts...it idles then falls then idles then falls then idles then falls then eventually it will stay at around 900....until it gets more warmed up and it starts to idle way up again.

that makes no sense to me but thanks anyways.
If that doesn't make sense than you might want to consider purchasing a code scanner for like $30 at your local parts store.
