Junkyard/DIY Performance

RE: Junkyard/DIY Performance
I believe it was the 96-97.5 explorer that had GT40 and after that they were GT40P. And I think Lightings had GT40 heads.

A note on the Lincoln Mark VII rear end, the Mark VII came in three different configurations: 1) standard 2.73:1, 2) LSC 3.27:1, and 3) turbo diesel 3.73:1. Thought that may help some of you junkyard dogs a little as far as identification goes.
EDIT: these ratios are for the 1985 Marck VII's.

RE: Junkyard performance
i was wondering, are there any superchargers i can get from a junkyard to use on my 88 gt? also are the heads and intake manifold on the explorer direct bolt on? or do they require other componets?

RE: Junkyard performance
I will clarify a few things I've read so far and add a few more.
5.0 Explorer heads: The early '96 models had GT40 heads. The late '96-up 5.0s had GT40Ps. Although you do need special headers for the P heads, there is one brand u/e shorty headers do fit without being a special part number (I believe it's MAC). Next to the lower header bolts there are letters cast into the head. A GT40 will say GT. A GT40P will have GTP. The same casting also appears where the rocker pedestals are. On the front of the heads the GT40 will have 3 ridges and a GT40P will have two.
5.0 Explorer intakes are the same as Cobra intakes.
4.0 Explorers (yes, V6) came with 30lb injectors.
When converting to no a/c and no power steering, you can use a waterpump from an '83 Cougar 302 car. It is standard rotation. The w/p can be bought new at the parts store way cheaper than buying a delete kit to route your belt around. You will have to convert to electric fan though. If you bolt up a stock fan, you'll push air through the radiator.
'94-'96 F code 351 blocks were roller blocks.
'86-earlier 5.0s did not have valve reliefs. Avoid them.
'93 5.0 was hypereutectic. Not as diserable.
The real 5.0 HOs were in Mustangs and Mark VIIs. The 5.0 HOs in Cougars, etc. were hypereutectic motors (all years - and I believe they had different cams). But they are a good score for E7s (like those are a score).
Cobras had 24lb injectors but were programmed through the computer, not the mass air meter.
The best 5.0 motors to look for were in Mark VIIs. They were grandma driven and generally lower mileage. The accessories are different though.
'94-'95 spindles are good for 5 lug conversion.
'99-'04 calipers were dual piston for your 5 lug conversion.
'93 Cobra and '94-'95 rearends were wider than fox 8.8s.

RE: Junkyard/DIY Performance
the 96 ford explorer 5.0 is where i got my upper and lower intake. it is a cheap mod and gives you high hp and torque gains. you will need a throttle body adapter that you can get fairly cheap. the whole intake swap for me was 175$ for the intake and 100$ for the throttle body adapter. i bought the top of the line though. there are ones out there for 60$.

Question for all you junkyard dogs. Any knowledge on compatable disk brake systems for the 87 GT. Looking to remove the drums economically.

RE: Junkyard/DIY Performance
you can grab a torus alternator, i believe its the 3G alternator, runs anout 130amps, easy to wire in as well be you early or late model, and bolts directly up. as mentioned before the torus fans also are a great upgrade, if i remember correctly the fans out of a dsm(talon, eclipse, laser) will fit and work really well. just as a side note for those of you doing 5-lug conversions, soem of the later 90's stuff wont work, they arent the right size and stick out. i'm not sure when they started using them but the GT seats i believe have lumbar and what not, thats an upgrade to those of us with LX seats, well at least in '85 lol, thats all i can think of at the moment

4.0 Explorers (yes, V6) came with 30lb injectors.
The 4.0 SOHC engine that ran in the explorer 97 to present also runs a 19 lb injector
And in turn the 5.0 GT-40 motors in the explorer also run a 19 pound.
Not trying to contradict you, just don't want folks grabing the wrong items. I have had both 4 liters in my X's. The current Explorer has the OHV engine which is by far the better of the 2 v-6's as far as dependability goes.
The SOHC has a better top end the OHV more torque down low.
