Default cam without mass air

i have an 88 lx but everyones saying you can't get a cam for it unless you convert from your speed density (I think thats what its called) to mass air. I dont understand this though b/c woudlnt ford expect people to upgrade their cam and such?. What exactly would happen if I changed my cam would the car just stall a lot and run like SH*t. Is there anyway to change the cam in my car without adding Mass AIR. I mean come on, mass air is a little expensive dont you think. Just need some input , thanks.

ford put mass air on cars in 88 only in california, then on all mustangs in 89, you can put a cam on a SD car but it has to be under a certain lift, but with mass air you can add HCI since the mass air adjusts to the mods better than SD

ive heard you can get the speed density tuned for your mods but untill you do it wont run right. if your going to go and get it specifically tuned for you mods and spend all that money just buy that maf
