your car would be less likely to cool at idle if the WP was bad

However, if you have a clogged radiator... the car will still be able to cool itself at idle, but with the extra stress of the car driving, it would overheat.

Ive seen it before, its happened to me before. You're gonna spend the money to get the WP replaced, and then still end up having to put a radiator in it... why not do it right, the first time?

listen to adder. i have a 95gt and i'll tell you the best things i have added to my car. for starter the fluidyne radiator, next would be the top end package for some added horsepower, and then the rear end gears. these three things made a major difference in the way my car runs. with my radiator now i can't make it go above 1/2 it mostly sits at 1/3 of the way. i did alot things thinking it would make my car fasteror better. not to knock the otherstuff i've done to my car, but trust me upgrade that radiator with a be cool or fluidyne. those headache you are having will surely fade away.

yah, i'd suspect either a clogged rad or an obstruction in the cooling system...
rad is much more likely
