Default rack and pinion issues.

Please help! I installed a rack and pinion in a 1989 Mustang Gt for my brother. Once I started the car it sucked in some more fluid soI topped it off. I then worked it from stop to stop w/o a problem. Lowered the car backed it out of the garage, went for a test drive, and as soon as I hit the road i lost power steering. Pump makes no noise. And in between shifts at the fire house I've jacked the car up and worked it from stop to stop for approx. 20 min several times w/o success.

Have you re-checked the fluid level? I know you said it got some in.. but once it runs and the pump starts actually pumping it, it would need some more added. Just making sure.. chekc the obviosu stuff. Did it all leak out somewhere? etc

I would also say check the pulley on the pump since you said you don't hear any pump noise.

What problems was the car having that made you install a new rack and pinion? Was this a problem before the install?

The fluid is full. I really don't notice any pulley problems. I replaced the rack due to it leaking mildly and a worn out r/s inner tie rod socket. The rack new was only 37.00 dollars more then just the socket. I have good pressure at the pump (took the line loose and put my finger over the hole), and fluid coming out of the return line. As i lost fluid, when it got low through the tests, I would top it off.

What is the best way to bleed out the air other then removing the power steering cap and turning the wheel from stop to stop?

That might be the problem right there!
