Default 911!!! Tranny Help

I just bought my car about three weeks ago. The genious that owned it before me put gear oil in the tranny then had it flushed. Anyways, the synchros in 2nd were sticking and now I cant engage 2nd at all. At first it would shift under calm driving conditions but wouldnt engage when under "hard" driving conditions. I can shift it into 2nd but as soon as I let off the clutch it starts to sound like I'm grinding and kicks the shifter out of gear. I know its the synchros. Heres my deal. I have thought about just buying a used tranny. Found a used T5 for $300 with 60k miles or I can get a T5 rebuild kit. Also, I heard that a T56 would bolt up to a 302. Is this true? Which transmission would be better, the T5 or the T56? I know I don't want to buy a new tranny. I'm trying to do this on a budget. Thanks all!

If the tranny is bad make sure you get a t-5 out of an sn95,(94-95) not one out of an 87-93. The input shaft is different. I know a few other trannies will fit but I can not tell you what ones they are, wait for a few of the tranny guru's to chime in.

Thanks buddy, I did not know that about the pre-94 T5's.

you probably cant afford to put a T56 in if your looking at $300 T5's

If you do get a pre 94 T5, you will need to swap the input shaft and input shaft bearing retainer from your stock tranny to the new one

There are a few in the local classifieds I was looking at for a little bit more. If the T56 is better and would fit, I'd be willing to spend a little extra cash.

Anyone else ever heard of this? Is it just my synchros or do I need a full rebuild / new transmission?

you'll need to take it apart and inspect the blocker rings and the friction material on them along with the sincro hubs...if the problem is centralized around just one or two gears then most likely it's a tranny internal issue
