TKO500 OR 600
ok i have an 88 mustang. it was a swap for 4 to 8cyl. it has a 95 bottom end im told. i need to swap the trans and clutch. i plan on setting the car up for road racing later on. i want to get either the tko 500 or 600. i kinda want to stay with the 500 for the $ issue. but what would be the best one to get with 373 gears. also what other parts will i need? do i need to change the cross member, driveshaft, and sensor/wires etc. thanks

ok well im gonna go with the 500 i found the kit from jegs, but for the flywheel how do i know what one to get. i mean with how many teeth, internal or external balance, and the weight its balanced to?

10.5", 157tooth, 50oz balance
You will need to take old flywheel that came off the engine
and new flywheel up to engine shop and have them "balance matched"
to keep engine balance correct
www.50resto.com sell swap x-member that bolts right in place.
on my TKO 600 I needed a new yoke too, but not sure if 500 requires that due to output shaft spline count.

RE: TKO500 OR 600
If i were you id just go with the 600. When i was looking for a TKO every place i looked the difference was only around $100. Alot of people who go with the 500 do it because they want to keep the 10 spline clutch but if your upgrading the clutch anyways why not go 600? Also you will need the 31 spline slip yoke and you can buy a new crossmember or you can just modify the one you have in there now, it only takes about5 min and saves you some $$$

RE: TKO500 OR 600
did you have to get the driveshaft shortened? id probably just modify mine cuz its got all poly bushings in it. your right the 600 is only $100 more. how is it in 5th gear do you cruise on the highway at a lower rpm at all? also how are the shifts shorter between them or nothing at all. i have 3:73 so i dont know how that compares to what you have 91lx5.0. will the shifter location change at all and does it come with a short shifter?

RE: TKO500 OR 600
I have heard some people needed a shorter driveshaft but with the new slip yoke everything lined up perfectly and i have no vibrations or anything. The 500 has a .68 5th and the 600 has a .64 5th, you will never know the difference. The shifter location stays the same and it will come with a shifter but you can buy a short shifter for it. I installed mine in the beginning of the summer and when you first drive it the shifts are extremley tight, ive only put about 2K miles on it so far so its still getting broken in and seems to be loosening up nicely, once i get about 5K ill decide wether or not i need a shifter for it but so far it looks like it will be fine

ok you got a new bellhousing too right? what type of clutch did you go with? i have to pull my trans soon and see why my clutch is chattering, so if its gonna be a cheap fix then ill just do that to hold me over. if not then im going all out and doing everything at once.

Yes you will need a new bellhousing in all you will need:
Bellhousing, clutch(if going 26 spline), flywheel, modify crossmember, 31 spline slip yoke, and 3 qts of syncromesh/synchromax/etc.
I went with a centerforce dual friction so far its held up great. You really cant go wrong with spec/centerforce
