I have not changed any wiring. All the wires were insulated and otherwise looked fine. After I wrapped up the connector I cranked it up and drove it about 5 miles back home no problem. The alternator was in the car about 7 years.

It is not the wires. It's the connection where the plug mates to the terminals of the alt. They become loose, they corrode, cause high resistance, they get hot andthen you have fire.

RE: Altenator Fire!!
Had the same thing happen to me about a week ago.Unfortunately, my car burned in the driveway for about 20 minutes until a neighbor knocked on my door and let me know. Fire department had to peel back the hood to get it put out.

RE: Altenator Fire!!
Must be something in the air.
My alternator on my race car started acting funny on 8/25.
Probably the connectors on the fine 1985 wiring.
Small amount of smoke, not a lot. Glad I was not in the middle of a burn-out or something like that.
I ordered a 1 wire from Summit that day and installed it last weekend.

RE: Altenator Fire!!
my ranger had the same connector and same alt, I had the plug burn up and melt bad, same thing, seen the smoke and disconnected it.
it was at night and where the plug melted it was glowing like it was on fire with a blue flame, but it wasnt on fire, not sure if theres radioactive stuff in it or something, it was wierd.
got a new plug from a junkyard and it was all good after.
