RE: Smoking alternator, dead battery wtf???
Partial Update....I charged up the battery and ran the car with the charging wire disconected and there was no more smoke, so it looks like it was just comming from the rubber on the end melting, hopefull from just shorting against the case.
I checked out the wire a little closer too and it looks fine everywhere, so hopefully all I need is a new wire.....hopefully[&:]

Somewhat related I bought a 94 S-10 once that occasionally as you were driving and hit a small bump the engine would die and all the gages would go crazy. Let it set a while and boom it would start up. Eventually it stranded me on the interstate, took me about a half an hour to find it. Between the engine & K-member the main power harness had chafed ever-so-slightly enough to expose wire and on certain nights when the moon was right it would completely short the system. Eventually as it cooled it would pull away.....until it got too bad obviously.
Moral of the story......I had checked the harness before....but I always skipped the section that passed between because it was extremely difficult to get to........it would have been much easier in my driveway than alongside the interstate....LOLOL

RE: Smoking alternator, dead battery wtf???
Another update....I left the battery over night with the charging wire disconected and it still had a charge in it, also when I was looking at the charging wire it brushed against the alternator and sparks flew everywhere. Would it be live even when the car is off?
Seems like it should be only putting out power when the alternator is spinning but I am not an expert

the charge wire goes from the alt directly to the battery or the always hot side of the selonoid.....if you had the terminals on the battery then of course this wire would spark when it touches ground cause it's a live wire, with the battery hooked up still you can't flop the charge wire all over the place....

The EXACT same thing happened on my '98 S-10... That's how it got the nickname "sparky"...
So.. .Too all of those looking for a 94-03 S10 beater (they're awesome beaters) this is apparently a common problem.
