does anyone know what main bearings are made of?

Depends on the bearing type. Some use multiple layers of different materials, aluminum etc

The most common are copper/lead alloy with a layer of babbit that the crank rides on, these are called tri-metal. The other most common type is Aluminum (Clevitte 77 bearings are Aluminum) . Which is a multi-layered aluminum alloy. They are stronger than the copper/lead alloy (tri-metal)But typically there is a weight difference. You can use Aluminum for heavy duty applications but you will most likely have to have the rotating assembley balanced.
