im sure it was put there for a good reason, like vibration or something but i removed mine when i got my car 5 months ago. I have not noticed any problems.

I think it is some kind of counter weight put there for some reason. Not sure of why but probably put there for a reason.I think I have heard Roundman speak of it before.

its called a "dogbone"... not sure the actual name for it. its there to help reduce vibration from the driveshaft. its not needed if you have an aftermarket driveshaft and not really needed with the stock driveshaft either

it is a rear end vibration damper designed to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) in the vehicle while it moves down the highway. it helps cancel out vibration harmonics in the driveshaft similar to the way the crankshaft damper does for the engine. I would leave it on there myself as it ain't hurting anything and the factory would not have installed it if it wasn't a good reason for it to be there.

yea its the dogbone and its just there to help vibration as the stock drive shaft is not very balanced... as soon as i took mine off, it made my assend have major wheel hop when i tried to burn out... but then it went away after a month or so...
