so im guess then that it happens whereever there is a transfer of power. tranny or diff.....could it be either or just mostly in the gears?

In my experience's, i have done a few gear changes, it is has been the diff. When i swap gears i also do all axle bearings too, so that may help as well.

lol yea well when i changed the ujoint i had soooo much freeplay in the rear.
