5.0 questions and cam selection.
i am a 4.6er and want to learn a little bit more about 5.0's because i am looking for a car to build as a drag car. i have a few basic questions and i have done some searching but would like to learn more. i dont have the car yet, but plan to get it in the near future. i think i am going with a notch because it is ~200 lbs lighter and because they seem to be a little bit cheaper. eventually i will swap in a 351W, but for the meantime, i want to make the 302 a little bit faster, but nothing insane. keep in mind i am mainly familiar with 4.6L SOHC engines and not the pushrod 302's.
i think from reasearching i am going to go with the GT40P heads, because i can pick them up for around $600 and they seem to put up decent flow numbers for the price.
as far as cams go what would be better, hydrolic roller tappet or mechanical roller tappet or any other type and what is the difference? what would i need to do the insall other than a new timing chain, gaskets, etc?
from the specs i saw on the GT40P heads, they can work up to a .550 lift. what would be a good cam choice for a drag car? i want as big of a cam i can get without having to notch the pistons or touch the bottom end. i also want all of the power up high and would sacrifice torque for top end. would i need to get new liftes or pushrods with any of that?
thank you for your time and knowledge in advance.
oh and i found a really cool site in case some of you havent seen it: http://www.302w.com/engine_database/..._database.aspx

RE: basic 5.0 questions and set up ideas.
Notch's are actually more expensive here. If motor is stock it is a roller block so you would get a hydraulic roller. You can buy much better heads used for a little more than $600. I would look into some TF's, but that is my preference because i run them on my 357.

what year motors in stock form would be rollers?
trickflows are around $1200 from THR. i am thinking of using that $600 difference and a little bit more on 4 cyl front springs, lakewood 90/10's, and control arms as well as having the 4.10's installed that i have sitting in my garage.
im not really concerned about making tons of power with the 302 because i will only be driving it until i get out of college, then when i have the cash i will build a wicked 351/408W.
what is a particularly good cam company or are they all just about the same. i pretty much get the basics of the duration, lift, and lobe seperation, so is it just finding the cam that has the best specs for my application?
would i be able to use pretty much any cam with under a .550 lift without touching the bottom end?

ok, so which cam would be a better choice,
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku lunati 284/292, .500/.510 with 112 lobe seperation. advertised power band is 2.5-6k
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=skucrane 280/290, .491/.509 with 110 lobe seperation. advertised powerband is 2.8-5.8k
any other suggestions are definitely welcome i just picked two that seem to have the powerband i want with under a .550 lift because of the GT40P heads. i would not need to notch my pistons with either one of those cams, would i?

just remember to match whatever you get. you could get the highest flowing heads. the largest cam but if they are not matched then its not going to make the hp of a basic set up.
