Default timing advance and premium

I've heard people who advance their timing a lot having to switch to premium to stop the pinging. I don't see how this is practical so someone help me understand. You want to set your timing so that the fuel ignites as the piston begins to move down. The fuel won't ignite right when the spark goes so that is why timing is crucial. Now, can't you get the fuel to ignite at the same time on regular fuel as you can with high octane and advanced timing? Unless you have pinging due to high compression I don't see how high octance is necessary. Someone enlighten me.

Advancing the timing increases hp and also gives the car a lil quicker "seat of the pants" acceleration.

Yes but only to a certain point. And don't you reach this point before advancing more and having to running premium due to pinging? It seems to me like advancing to the point of pinging and then retarding it by adding premium just cancels out the timing advance.

Adding premium does not retard the timing. It does give it the added octane to prevent pinging.

But doesn't the higher octane basically "retard" the timing of the explosion since it burns slower?
