Valve Travel on a stock 89 LX 5.0
 

I need some information for my law suit.

When a valve, intake and exhaust, is fully open on a stock head and cam (89 LX... what is the distance from the bottom of the valve to the top of the head? How far doeach of thevalves travel?

I guess what I am asking is the lift of a stock cam?

I found a chart that says "elevation intake""and elevation exhaust"
.0278 .0278

So does that mean that the intake and exhaust are both opened about a quarter inch?

The reason I am wondering is the mechanic said that the bolt made it down a runner into an open valve and that is an accident... not negligence. I started thinking about the whole thing and began to wonder if a bolt could even fit in the open valve. I cant imagine there is much room between the valve stem andthe intake port for a bolt to fit. That would mean that he had to drop the bolt in the head and then put it back together.

I could believe that a bolt that was 5/16 shank and 1/2 head (hex) , or smaller, could fall down in there......

could very well happen, but no matter what the only way a bolt could fall in is if someone dropped it into the intake - if you didnt do it, someone else did (the mechanic?!?)

There is no doubt it was the mechanic. He admitted he did it. The question is how he chose to repair the car. That involved him over milling the passenger head in an attempt to remove chips and dimples made by the bolt causing the intake to not seal, the then replaced the number 4 piston with the wrong piston, and when putting the head back on he put the head gasket on back wards. Car would not run worth a crap so I took it to another shop. $1800.00 To repair his mistakes. He refused to pay saying he fixed it the correct way. I am going to sue him.

i dont get the milling thing. if everything was bolted down and then a bolt started bouncing around, it could do ding or dent any part of the head that needed to be a sealing surface, cause those surfaces would already BE sealed where the bolt could not hit there.

i dunno about what piston he used, so you may have had vibration issues from that - and i would be very surprized if it DIDNT nick the cylinder walls which would cause blowby and a lower cylinder pressure.
