what machine work do i need

i went to a few machine shops not knowing what i need and keep geting talked in to a $3000 bill. i have the original block i pulled from my 5.0 and forged kb pistons 0.30 and going to get a b303 cam. ive heard the stock rods and crack can easily handle 500 hp . so i wasnt planing on changing them but the machine shops keep saying i should change them . the motor was pulled out because the head gasket went out on one side. i dont know how it happened i bought the car like that and bought a motor from craigslist for 400 it runs good with no problems but i just want more power now. i know i need to get the bottom end balanced, block bored and honed, hot tanked and short block assembled . is there any other machine work i would need on the block or bottom end. my buddy and i can assemble the top end of the motor .

No stock internals will not handle 500hp, you will blow that block apart.

Thats just a 306 installing them .030 pistons.

Id get a balanced 347 kit for $1k that includes all parts, and just pay the shop to bore and hone .030

$200-$300

i dont plan on juicing it or putting on a blower so how will it blow?

you mentioned 500hp, the stock internals cannot do that.

But if you just have your rotating assembly balanced $300, block bored and honed .030 $200 and install them .030 pistons, and a decent HCI $$$, Im sure you could get 350 FWHP.

well, a 306 should pass with Smog legal HCI and Intake, as long as you have converters

and you should get 300 hp with a decent HCI
