The stiffness is the clutch and the griding is the syncros in the tranny most likely

I'm new to Mustangs, but do know that sometimes the type of gear oil can effect the way manual transmissions operate. Redline makes several types of synthetic gear oils that work differently in a transmission, and even a different way when blended. I will describe the characteristic that I got rid of as "notchy". Going from first to second wouldnt really grind, but just didnt slide smoothly into gear. Changed oils and that problem was substantially reduced. There may be more on this topic on bobistheoilguy.com.
My 92 LX has a mushy AOD that I wish was a 5 speed. Was the swap difficult?

Get a firewall adjuster so you can fine tune your adjustment. I would upgrade the quadrent as well
