tr-3550 to tko 500
i have the tremec tr-3550 in the car currently and at high revs around 5,500 it is hard to upshift, reverse grinds and downshifting into 3rd is real hard. i was thinking since my clutch is near new, that i could just swap it out for a tko 500 and be done? i know they are basically the same tranny but i was hoping if someone knew if the input and output shafts are the same. my tr-3550 has a 26 spline input cause the part number is 2600682. is this possible?

Call Tremec
High rpm shift problems are known to them
and they have a "kit" to fix it.
No need to swap transmission, just fix yours relatively cheap.
It grinds going in reverse because these transmissions do not have syncros for reverse.
Put it in 5th or 4th before trying reverse and it should not grind

you'll have to change clutches for the tko. The input shaft uses a differentspline count. I'm not sure if the output shaft is different or not. When I got my 3550 it wouldn't stay in reverse. Turned out that the shifter was not properly machined. It took a few 4 letter words and a couple tear downs for tremmec to believe it was there problem and not mine.
Be sure your clutch is dis-engaging all the way when you try to shift. They will hound u about that. And if they ask you stupid questions like if you checked the input clearance than just remind them that you purchased an advertised direct bolt in transmission. "Make sure the clutch dis-engages ALL the way" Cables can stretch exspecially on a new clutch. good luck

another quick question. does it grind into gears other than reverse while driving. If it needs refreshing I found a rebuild kit for under $200 for mine and completed the service in an evening. Just find a local tranny supply shop not a repair shop. After changing out the synchros and bearings the thing shifts better than when it was new.

no it doesnt grind into any other gears and i tried putting it in 4th before reverse and that worked like a charm. do you if the bellhousings are the same for the tko and the tr3550? should i ditch my tranny or pull it and work on it?

Just pull your trans and install the fix for the high speed shift problem.
No need to buy new trans, you arent going to get anything stronger
and it will cost you a LOT more to replace rather than just fix the small problem you have.
Your clutch might need a little adjustment too at worst.
Really no need to replace it, you have a good trans there.
