engine help.......
I'm fairly new to all of this, but ill be working on it with my father, but i have a few questions, so bare with me if you can. Now we have a cylinder that doesnt seem to be workin (blowing smoke and spark plug is getting all fouled up). So we've taken the valve cover off and the lifters are working for all valves. We adjusted all the lifters and everything seems to be workin up top. Now what should we do next. Should we take a look at the head? Is it likely that theres a valve issue if the liftersare allworking? I can't see anyhting else to do in order to address the problem? Any help or advice? Thanks inadvance.

RE: engine help.......
I don't claim to be an expert, but I have a couple of questions. Is the smoke blueish (oil), black (fuel) or white (coolant). If the spark plug is oil fouled, it's usually 1 of 2 things. Either the valve seal/guide is bad, or you have bad rings in that cylinder. My bet being that it's only 1 cylinder is a bad guide. I would start with a dry compression test on all cylinders, record the readings, and then do a wet compression test (squirt about a table spoon of oil in each cylinder). Make sure you remove all of the spark plugs, and hold the throttle wide open when cranking the engine, so you will get an accurate reading. This will tell you 2 things. The condition of all of your cylinders, and it should narrow down your problem to rings or guides (if the readings are substantially higher on the wet test, you have a ring problem). I just went through a similar problem on my 300 six, and 2 of the exhaust guides were completely worn out, even though the head wasrebuilt by a reputable shop 3000 miles earlier?. We never did find the reason, but 12 new guides, and everything seems fine now
