Will I run out of gear with my 275/40/17 tires and 4:10 gears at the end of the 1/4 mile?

5TH gear is overdrive and the extra shift will slow you down.

If he has a transgo shift kit. I'll assume it's an auto, so there will be no shifting into 5th.

Black89. Your 3rd and my 4rth are both 1:1. I have a similar set up.
I shift at 4800 and set my shift light at about 4600. My gear is a bit higher at 3.73 but also have a smaller tire 235 45 17. My shift light is on in 4rth way before the finish line. About 50' before. I let her shine and run it out into fourth.

I see no problem with letting your auto shift into 4rth if you reach your shift point.

I have 245/45/17s with a 3.73 screw and could use more gear like a 4.10. Theres no diameter difference really between 275/40/17s and 245/45/17s and since your 3rd is the same ratio as my fourth, 1:1, it should be plenty.
