Default vibration at 85mph

ok, so last week my entire car would vibrate and rattle at 65mph. The dash sounded like it was going to fall apart. I took it to my local mechanic and he noticed that my u-joint on my driveshaft needed to be replaced, the rod barings inside were shot, and the driveshaft would make a clicking when manualy turned. So, he replaced both the front and back u joints, the new ones now can be greased. The vibration stopped at 65, but now the car vibrates at 85. If I keep going it stops once I hit about 90. Last night I got up to about 110, then put it in neutral and sure enough, when the car slowed to 85 it starts vibrating, and stopped around 75. My mechanic thinks my tires need to be balanced, but at one point my shifter was shaking, and i can hear a whining noise coming from what sounds like the tranny, so I thought it was in the drivetrain. Any ideas? Thanks

Driveshaftmaybe bent, I had the exact same problem, once you hit 80-85 it rattled like crazy, speed up it goes away, slow down and come back to that speed it shakes again. Alot of the vibrating comes from what seems the center of the car and the shifter **** shakes like crazy. Driveshaft solved all vibrations for me, bought an aluminum FMS driveshaft complete with yoke, and u-joints for around $250 or so from JEGS.

Maybe not, have your mechanic check to see if it is bent or not, really easy to test.

I had mine put on a lift put the car in neutral, held a screwdriver against the shaft (so the screwdriver couldn't move) and had someone turn the back wheels and the line that the screwdriver leaves on the shaft should meet if the shaft is not bent, but if it is bent the line will not meet once the shaft has been turned one full turn. There may be other ways to determine this but that is the only way i know other than taking it to a shop or a driveline place.

Same problem with mine - vibration in the 80 mph range only, so maybe this is a common problem? Mine has been doing it for years but never really got any worse. I will definitley check my driveshaft now. Thanks.

those fms driveshafts are nice units... less rotating mass and they come totally complete ready to bolt in.. should take less then a half hour including jacking the car up and everything.
