mechanical fuel pump?'s
hey guys, i have an 85 gt that is carb'ed and it currently has a hack job of a fuel line/ pump setup. i want to take the holley electric fuel pump out cause its loud and i hate having to turn the switch on and off. i then want to replace it with a mechanical one. which mechanical pump should i get that will flow enough fuel if i decided to supercharge it. i read that you can get boost sensitive pumps? and lastly, will the pump bolt right in and work or do i need to know if my cam has the lobe for it? i did not build the motor therefore i have no idea what cam is in it. but it is set up for carb so is it a safe bet that the cam has the lobe? thanks for the help, john

RE: mechanical fuel pump?'s
you can rewire the switch with a special oil pressure cut switch that is normally open but as soon as you crank the car and it builds oil pressure the switch closes and wham on comes the pump.....I'd stick with the holley pump and if it's the red holley pump I'd upgrade to the blue as you'll need more availible fuel pressure that'll sustain a constant gph flow rate......also it'll come with an adjustable regulator so you can dial it in.......which you will need if planning on supercharging it......as for the carb...when you supercharge it depending on the S/C kit you want to use for example a roots type like a weiand 174 you'll need a special supercharger carb and if you plan to use a pressurized carb box and or carb hat...you'll need a special blow through supercharger carb.............. you can of course modify stock carbs to work....one area that has to be modified is the power valve which when put under pressure won't work correctly because it's theroy of operation is based on vaccum control..........anyway either way you choose you'll need to research your basket of parts to purchase

RE: mechanical fuel pump?'s
mechanical pump FTW!!!!!! it may take like 1 hp to drive the thing, but it will outlast the electric pump and when it finally does fail it will be cheaper to replace.
look up in the timing cover where the pump blockoff plate is (unless your timing cover has been replaced with one that doesnt have the holes in it for the pump) you should be able to see the eccentric sticking off the front of the cam gear. any carter/edelbrock/holley high flow pump should be just fine, with or without a supercharger.
