Default Fuel Problems?

Hello, I'm having a problem with my 86GT. When I am driving and I give it any gas, it kind of sputters and just doesn't want to go. It doesn't sputter like it is going to die or anything, but I can tell it just doesn't want to accelerate. The whole car shakes when it does this. If I just barely put the pedal down it's alright, but once I push down a little further it does this. Also, when it is just sitting there in neutral it revs up just fine. I recently changed the plugs, plug wires, and fuel filter, and the fuel injectors were cleaned by a mechanic not too long ago (to get it to pass emissions). Once I changed the fuel filter, it ran ok for about 24 hours, then it started doing it again. Could there be so much junk in my fuel system that the new filter is getting clogged again as well? The car has not been driven regularly in about 5 years, if that helps at all.Any advice here would be appreciated. Thanks <edited><editID>PaintMy86GT</editID><editDate>37887.7630787037</editDate></edited>

Default Fuel Problems?

Have you ran a couple tanks of gas through it yet? <edited><editID>mdvaldosta</editID><editDate>37887.7828125</editDate></edited>

Default Fuel Problems?

Same exace thing happened to me, and its really not to hard to clear up. I have a 95 GT so it may be different but the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve was bad. Caused the studdering and the idol to be a little messy at times, even dying. I'm not to sure bout the 86s but that was the exact problem with mine. Lowest price I found was 101$ and thats what I got it for brand new. Sometimes it would run good and sometimes not, so maybe your 24hr spell was a coinsidence with the fact that you changed the fuel filter. Anyway, hope this helps.

Default Fuel Problems?

MDValdosta- I am on mythird tank of premium right now, althoughthis is the first time I haverun it downreally lowbeforefilling it up. I was hoping that might be part of the problem as well.</P>

95Stealth- Sounds like that is a possibility, however mine idles perfectly. It fluctuates a little bit (it is 17 years old) but it stays pretty close to 1000. And since it started running bad again it hasn't stopped. As for the fuel filter, right after I changed it, it ran like brand new (it was the original fuel filter too). But sometime the next day it started doing that crap worse than before, and hasn't let up. I wonder if there are any other sensors that might be the cause?</P>

Also, does anyone think any part of my exhaust could be the cause? It almost feels like it is getting stopped up when I give it a little gas.</P>

Pull the filter and cut it open. Not with a torch<IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0">! Look and see if it is all cruded up. If so you may want to check the new filter for the samething. The tank maybe filled with crap and the filter is getting clocked with it. If the tank is filled with crap it may be easier to replace the tank then trying to clean it. Check the fuel pump too that may also be a culprit.</P>

As aside note. Try not to get gas on a day where they are refilling the tanks, the day after and possibly the day before. It is tuff to figure out if you don't always go to the same station all the time. but it eliminates alot of the sediment that get's stirred up from refilling the tanks. Alos going up a grade or two helps with the setiment problem too&gt; Most people don't buy the expensive stuff and those tanks usually just get topped off when they fill the tanks.</P>

Do a fuel pressure check, that will possibly eliminate any fuel delivery problem, that way you don't end up replacing a bunch of parts trying to guess whats wrong there. Also, get some carb cleaner and spray it around all your vacuum lines and egr valve, if your idle changes then thats where you have a vacuum leak. As for your exhaust, you are probably referring to your catalytic converter, when they get stopped up they run real hot, so hot they can turn kinda red, so just look under the car at night after it warms up. </P>

*** noticed something *** You say you changed your fuel filter then it ran better for a day or so, so do what silvergtv8 said and take a look at your old fuel filter, then change your new one again and look at it too.</P>

Default Fuel Problems?

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I will definitely try those things out. I wouldn't be surprised if the tank was full of crud, I have owned the car for about one and a half years without driving it much, and the previous owner hadn't driven it in about 3 years I'd say. As for the exhaust, yes I was referring to the possibility of a clogged converter, but I checked it out the other day and it didn't glow, so I don't think that's it. One more thing, (and sorry to ask so many questions), but someone suggested to me that it could be something like my timing being off. What do you guys think about that? Wouldn't that have an effect on the way my car runs when idling? Thanks again for all the help.

I dont think that the sensors are the grand problem here, because on and 86, it is still mostly free from too much electronic control. But that could be the case, you could always do an electricdiagnostic and use the trouble codes or take it to the dealer for an electrical diagnostic. Shouldnt be too expensive.
