Urgent water pump problem
Just heard that a carbureted 302 with 289 cylinder headsand a fuel injected 302 with 289 cylinder headshave different water pumps. Can anybody shed some light on this situation and at least let me know which water pump I need. I am running the carbureted 302 with 289 heads.

RE: Urgent water pump problem
The only difference I am aware of is the direction they turn. Usually on a carbs car, it will have a V belt(not always), which has a standard rotation. An EFI car normally(newer stangs)has a serpentine belt and a reverse rotation water pump. That is just how they came from the factory....the only determining factor is weather it has a V belt or a serpentine belt.

RE: Urgent water pump problem
as early as some 83 models had a serpantine belt set up..I purchased a 83 gt motor a few months ago for my bronco II conversion and it had the set up stock as could be direct pull out........as far as cylinder heads that doesn't matter on a 302 block nor does it determine the water pump rotation....but early heads on a late model block do require a mod to the gaskets = put a few extra steam hole in it for early style application heads the instructions in the fel-pro gasket kits mention how and where to do it....anyway as far as the water pump goes most v-belt style set ups were on early mustangs and had front sump pans and had a completely different timing cover which was where the dip stick was... for your application need to know what year stang??? rear sump pan??? what style timing cover??? meaning does the dipstick tube go through the block or timing cover???
