My 5.0 has black smoke and burns my eyes
all i know is its coming out of the exhaust.. it blows black smoke..and the smoke and odor is so strong it burns the hell out of my eyes when i'm sitting inside the car.
its a 87 5.0 5-spd. engine is all stock. only mod the previous owner did was replace both mufflers with straight pipes.it still has all stock cat-converters.
could i unbolt the headers and see if the black smoke is coming out of the engine? is it possible its the exhaust pipes causing it? probably not. or maybe the cat-converters?
if the reason is cuz its burning oil. then how i stop that?
i changed the oil, oil filter, nappa high pressure gas filter, drained gas tank, new gas, new autolite copper spark plugs, k&n high flow filter.
car runs good as hell.. fast and all. only problem is the black smoke and whatever it is that burns ya eyes.
i ran the codes with a digital ford code reader.. here's the codes. can they be related to the smoke?
o=
51, coolant temp. switch out of specified range
22, map sensor out of specified range
53, throttle position sensor input out of specified range
54, vane air flow sensor or air charge temp. sensor
35, egr pressure feedback, regulator check
67= neutral drive switch or circuit
r=

RE: My 5.0 has black smoke and burns my eyes
This is a joke, right? Please tell me you're not serious.
But in case you are, you have black smoke because you're running rich. And the reason is obvious if you have all those problems, it's gonna totally screw up the engine management trying to properly meter fuel

RE: My 5.0 has black smoke and burns my eyes
The main sensor that would cause the rich condition
is the ECT (coolant temp sensor). Its located on the
coolant tube thats on the passenger side of the intake
manifold. Change it and you should be good.

According to those codes it's more than just the ECT and O2's, there should be a way to test the voltage/resistance range for those sensors. Find out what it is and test the ones in the codes to see if they're not working properly

seems to me that you have a wiring problem to deal with.... might wanna get on that before you damage the motor

it leads to all of them
