Gears
So basically I always hear people at the local track mentioning the gearing they put into their stangs...That and im asked all the time what i have...I know i have a 8.8 but I dont understand what makes up the gear ratio? How do you decide when changing the gearing in your rear end what to go with...Do you base it on weither you want torque or top end?

RE: Gears
what i base mine on is i run on the hig high way alot so ill be runing 373s . 410s id be doing 85 at 3500 rpms so it would winde out the motor to fast since ill be on the high way. i also havean auto. id say if its a daily driver that youll sometimes be on the high way go with 373 if its an around town car 410s are great . i had them in my old car i loved them .

RE: Gears
8.8 is your rear end size. When they ask about your ratios I'd say they most likely aren't talking about the ratios in side the tranny but the ones inside the rear end. What makes up the ratios is the number of teethfrom the axles gear devided by the number of teeth from the drive shaft's gear.

RE: Gears
AOD- 4.10's
T5- 3.73's
Ive got 4.10's with my AOD and its fine on the highway. I was still able to do 120 on the highway and let off.
The rpm's are only about 500 more than stock.
Ive got a friend with 4.10's with a T5 and he says 1st gear is completely useless because it winds out too quick.

RE: Gears
stock 273 gears are good for highway speeds. Keeps the RPM low for fuel economy but the low end suffers a bit. 373 gears are better off the line, worse on the highway, but not bad. 410 and higher are even better off the line, even worse on the highway. All depends on what you want out of your car. Zero to 60 times are better with higher gears.

RE: Gears
ive got 373's in my t5 and first is just about useless lol its ther but any -flooring of the gas pedal and i can kiss me traction goodbye lol.The all around of the 373 tho is great 2nd and 3rd gear and awesome pull very hard and for higway crusing their great. If i was you and had a 5spd id go 373 their pretty decent on gas also....just dont go moshin around all the time lol
