Default Sounds like it's getting close...

to time for me to rebuild the motor. It's been progressively getting worse and now there are sounds starting to come from the bottom of the motor. I think I have had a piston ring going out because it blows smoke sometimes (which has also started to get worse). Does it sound like it needs to be rebuilt to ya'll or maybe something else? Also what kind of rebuild could i do on the cheap? Maybe if you could give me some ideas as far as parts and places to buy that would be great. I don't want to build it back stock unless i absolutely have to. Please help guys. I need to start buying stuff soon so i'm not SOL if and when it goes for good. Thanks guys!

If your lookin for cheap, you need to shop around. Used may be the ticket. Try racinjunk.com, corral.net, stangnet.com

i figured i was looking at around $1000 including any machine work but doing the teardown and rebuild myself. is that feasable or am i way off?

It'll all depend on how much machine work you'll need???? if you have to have it cleaned and bored and crank ploished and or heads re -done then after all that and buying a rebuild kit with all necessary gaskets and stuff you should just replace while motor is out like water pump, t-stat and belt clutch and or flywheeland hard to get to coolant hoses at the back.....then it'll be hard to keep the budget around 1000.00 but it's feasible ....pending on how much machine work it needs will be the limiting budget factor

ok another option would be to drop in a different motor and build mine on the side. would a 94-95 cobra motor be a direct drop-in? and howmuch would a decent motor like this cost/ places to find one?

A 94-95 motor should drop in, but you would need to mess with the transmission as the bellhousing wouldn't line up. It's doable, my friend did it, but easier to get an 87-93 motor.
