Less back pressure = less torque...
Several members have experienced this when cutting the tailpipes off.

The reason dimebag felt the little gain was because he free'd up a few horses with the o/r H because the stock H is very restrictive. If you had a completely stock exhaust and chopped off the tailpipes, you would notice a significant loss in tq.

And who knows, maybee SD reacts different.

I have tested many different setups.
It comes down to several things.
1. How much power are you putting to the ground.
2. What kind of tone are you looking for and at what RPM's.
3. How often do you drive your car in the lower rpm band.
4. Sound and power balance.
Your engine is a big ol air pump, you dont have to remove alot of backpressure to expel all of the exhaust from the cylinders to make more power and have a nice tone.
Its is important to remember, when your doing things like less backpressure, bigger heads and intake to a mild or stock engine(ex GT 40 Setup), you will notice a delay on part throttle, but an explosive amount of power past then, compared to stock.
A tune helps out somewhat.
You do need some backpressure on a stock N/A or ligtly modded engine to run properly, so if dumping , have mufflers or cats, if off road, have the pipe to the rear bumper.

My '92 GT had no tailpipes when I got it. I put on Flowmaster 2 1/2 in diameter, with turndowns at the end on it. I instantly noticed a better throttle response, and more power. Dumps right at the mufflers will definitely kill some power.
