Cam clearance

RE: Cam clearance
with 1.6 ratio I know you'll be fine as I have a F-cam in my 92 and stock ported heads and when I clayed it...it came close but was within safe spec as for 1.7's not sure..it'll all depend on your valve timing and the duration...best bet is to clay it as Joel5.0 says..

yes but don't expect massive gains if any when using stock heads as that'll be your hold back on power and flow..I switched from a stock cam to an F-cam and put stock heads back on that were slightly ported and my et and mph stayed almost the same = no improvement...so the moral of the story is get a decent set of heads with the f-cam

RE: Cam clearance
put some play dough on top of the piston covering the valve reliefs...bolt on the heads (I use an old head gasket for mock assembly..the same kind I intend to use when final assembly is to occur)...set up your valvetrain and turn the motor over 2 times by hand and remove the heads and see where the valves made an indentation in the play dough...I slice it with a razor blade and measure the thickness with a feeler gauge to get a rough idea of my piston to valve clearence

RE: Cam clearance
are you stuck on letter cams? or whats up w. that? not knocking letter cams at all, but theres more out there then b,e,f,x,z cams...
there is ALOT involved in cam choice... some ppl choose the cam 1st and work around it, other build the rest and get a cam for it, or a custom grind.
what are your other mods? by 88 does that mean your car is an 88? speed density?
