Rear axle housing mis-aligned??
Hi, I am new to his forum. I ran some searches but came up blank, hence this post....
I have an '88 GT convertible that I am considering building into a more brisk performer, but at the moment I am unsure if this car is worthy of further investment. The car has 175,000 miles and the original engine is about out of breath, but the bady, interior and general condition are pretty good, no rust.
Here's my dilimma:
The right rear wheel sits a little bit back toward the rear of the wheel well, the left side looks ok, but the car seems to drive and handle ok, and no weird tire wear. I took it to an alignment guy to have it assessed, in case it had been hit and was un-repairable. He tells me the front end had been adjusted to compensate for the rear being out of line, ( he measured a +44 on the right and a -33 on the left) and that rear axle housing needs to be re-hung and aligned. From what I've seen it doesn't appear there is very much adjustability of the rear control arms etc, and that you would be pretty much stuck with wherever the suspension pickup points are. Does this sound like something just new control arms and bushings would correct??
Any opinions or experience here among you that can guide me?? Thanks much....
Scott

RE: Rear axle housing mis-aligned??
yea new control arms should do the trick... check where the control arms attach to the body... might be torn up... if u really wanna be sure that new control arms will fix it, get adjustable ones...

RE: Rear axle housing mis-aligned??
Thanks guys!
I talked to a guy today who builds these cars for a living, and he confirmed the use of adjustable arms for this issue. He's done this a few times but wants to see the car first. He thinks the passenger side axle tube could be bent as well, which would mean replacing the rear end. I think I'm going to let him look at it and we'll make a plan from there. I see a 3.55 rear gear, disc brake upgrade, 17" 5 lug wheels and a total suspension upgrade in my future!
