Well I think you can eliminate the 351W and 460 right off the bat, expensive unless you have parts and you have 302 parts so build a 302. Boss blocks are nice but with your budget you would be sitting behind the wheel making vroom vroom noises because you would not have much more than a block. You can do these kind of things within your budget:

1 source a decent 302 roller shortblock, they are everywhere, for example I'm selling a roller block/crank/cam/pan all machined but thats irrelevant.

2 rebuild your short block assuming it is not trashed, if you are handy it is not all that expensive.

3 use remaining money for a decent h/c/i, add a little cash and get a trick flow top end kit, shop around find a decent set of heads used or needing rebuilt, for example I bought a new set of windsor junior heads ready to bolt on for 500, guy needed money NOW so that worked out.

Only problem I see in this scenario is after it is built and runs well, it won't handle the power very well without suspension mods....gears/springs/subframe connectors/battleboxes/rims/tires....
awesome thanks for the tips. Just to clarify the 2500 isnt my only budget for the car, 2500 is the money I have currently to throw at the car. The suspension/drivetrain (-motor) will be later. Right now im just focusing on the motor.

As Irish 1 said, if your handy and plan on doing the work your self, and find a 302 block you can easily see those 12's. Have it machined to make sure the bores are not out of round, and havethe mains checked. A 342 crank and a main cap girdle and some porting on the E7 heads and you'll have it. I would also recomend an engine rebuild kit. Bearings, rings, seals, gaskets and the like. Good luck.

You can hit 12's with gears, exhaust, slicks, and weight reduction.

Thats just a starting point. For a few years It will be my daily driver. The big thing Im thinking of is that I dont want to have to redo things, but if its nessissary I will. Mid 12s for now will be fine, but what I really want to try is autocross. Im not concerned about what I need as far as suspension is concerned, but you guys have real life experience with diffrent setups, all I know is **** I read, so any insight from you guys is a big help.
dude i give you kudos. a lot of people come in here and say i have $XX and these are my plans. and when they are told that something wont work, they throw a fit.

Ok from what i gather you want hadling and you want ETs. Well i think you should forget major engine mods right now and love the one u got and start with getting a good suspension. If you are leaning more to the handling side take your live axle and throw over a cliff, its prehistoric, and get a nice IRS, NO im wrong you should get an AE86. If you want brute go forward power leave the live axle and get a 4-link and still have some money left over for the engine. Finally if you want both id go with adjustable shocks on all four sides and a lowering kit and have money left for a....cold air kit and an exaust. excuse me if i seem a bit off, but my mustang is givin me trouble-darn lash cap whered you go-
