Good in what way? They shouldnt be smooth, they'll have a crosshatch pattern instead. And what about the PCV?

The correct way to do it is to measure the bore and the taper of the cylinder, but with 165K, if you are going to replace the rings, I'd bore it and add new pistons. Better yet, it's usually cheaper to buy an assembled shortblock.

it does still have the crosshairs in the cylinders and no ridge at the top. the pcv valve and filter have both been replaced that was the first thing to be done when i noticed th oil usage. and the car is going to be sold soon as i get it back together and i've already purchased new rings and rod bearings motor is already dissasembled to a short block so i'm gonna go ahead and replace those i was just wandering if the old ones were what was causing my problem

i would hit them witha ball hone to knock the glaze off before you reassemble. yea its possible the rings could be worn.

man wish I could tell how out of spec my cylinders were by just eye sight.......you need to use a bore gauge to check for out of round spec and or taper........plus if they are glazed with no cross hatch then that's a indicator of some wear and run your finger around the top of the bore where piston/ring travel stops and look/feel for a ridge = wear!!!

just make sure you use a berry hone to knock the glaze off the cylinder walls so the new rings can seat to it quicker
