The correct way to do it is to measure the bore and the taper of the cylinder, but with 165K, if you are going to replace the rings, I'd bore it and add new pistons. Better yet, it's usually cheaper to buy an assembled shortblock.

it does still have the crosshairs in the cylinders and no ridge at the top. the pcv valve and filter have both been replaced that was the first thing to be done when i noticed th oil usage. and the car is going to be sold soon as i get it back together and i've already purchased new rings and rod bearings motor is already dissasembled to a short block so i'm gonna go ahead and replace those i was just wandering if the old ones were what was causing my problem

are rings typical to go bad with out the cylinders to be worn? like at about 165k? i have a lot of blow by but my clylinders still look good
