Timing cover gasket

RE: Timing cover gasket
i actually just did that last night. need to remove the bracket that attaches to the ac compressor, no need to move the compressor or power steering pump. remove water pump bolts and water pump. four bolts pass through oil pan into timing cover. one bolt for ground wire to timing cover. smog pump brace bolts to timing cover, and also holds timing marks. remove harmonic balancer because the timing cover slides over crank. two bolts on top of timing cover and one in bottom front that attach to block. i removed my radiator so i could use an impact on the balancer.

RE: Timing cover gasket
two to three hours tops. the bolts that pass through the pan can be reached from above so there is no need to jack the car up, you can reuse them. the balancer will require a steering wheel/balancer puller. you can remove the big bolt in the center of the balancer without an impact, i've done it that way before. thing is though when you are trying to remove that bolt it turns the motor and that tries to move the car so an impact make short work of it. i actually didn't reuse the gasket on mine and it doesnt leak; just used some sealant. i have to go back in there to change the timing chain soon so i'll put a gasket on then. i had mine off because there were water pump bolts broken off in the block, hope that doesnt happen with you because that was a pain to fix.

RE: Timing cover gasket
ya somtimes those bolts that pass thru the timing cover break which hinders things quite a bit. dillon is correct about everything he said. some timing gaskets come with the new pieces for the corners of the timing cover where they meet the pan so if it tears when u take the cover off dont sweat it. the center bolt on the balancer will be easy to remove with a breaker bar. just make sure the car is in gear and ebrake is on.
