Default First step in waking up a 351W??????

I am assuming that the best place to start would be to get a set of good heads b/c I've heard the 351w doesn't breath very well.

What heads do you suggest?

The '69-70 heads are the best STOCK heads but I hear AFR is the way to go for aftermarket.
The 71-up 351w suffers from low compression and small valves.

it all depends on what your final goals for the engine are as to what heads will do the job. the heads, cam, intake all need to work together for the best final results.
try this site for some info on heads: http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/630.shtml

Well, I have two engines. I have a 1969w and a 1984w.

Thanks for the chart. I see that even though the 69 heads are the best stock heads, they do not come close to aftermarket heads.

My goals for both engines are as follows. Put the 1984 engine in and run it for now while I build the 69w engine up. I figure that if I buy heads they could go on either engine.

I want the 69w to be a stroker and target between 400 and 500 HP without a bottle, turbo or supercharger. I'll drive it on the street 95% of the time with 5% some non-serious road racing. It will be going in a 2,000 lb car (approximately) with a 3:55 rear end.

I don't really want to do too much to the 84w engine but I figure if I buy the heads I might as well have some fun with them while I build up the 69 engine.

From the chart, it looks like canfield has the best but I'm not familar with them. It looks like edelbrock vic jr. cnc (part number 61269) is the way to go??? Am I right?

Sounds like you have a good plan...
RETROFIT HYDRAULIC ROLLER CAM INSTALLATION KIT: CCA-31-1000,$49.39; is this the correct price?
Don't forget your MSD 6A or better box and do all the right stuff when machining your block.
What will be your CID and flow numbers for the heads?
Keep in mind the older blocks are a bit talller than the newer ones IIRC.

WELL first those prices are way high..do alil shoping and if your setting on summit they will price match..I like the inverted dome because it makes better power pushing air toward the spark plug... as for strok'in it I would use a slightly shorter rod and a longer piston for reliablity reason

head I would look at pro-line head with maybe a 2.05 valve
with that cam you may have to cut some on the rod bolt..not sure off have...this if your going with a bigger than a 408

Thanks for the replies guys.

The CID will be 393.

Summit wants me to go with their Brodix heads with a 68cc combustion chamber but they are pricey at $1594 I was looking for a cheaper but just as good alternative.

I thought the 69 block was slightly shorter than later models.

I got the number for Eagle engine parts to see if i can't get some of the things a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the confirmation.

BYW... A couple of prices are off. One of them that says $1995 should be $19.95. Typo.
