is it a highflow oil pump?

either way go buy a mech guage... i trusted my stocker... and ended up w a siezed pump and two thrown rods... whole time guage read that i was fine as far as oil pressure goes

i now have a mechanical one going on the car... i just dont know where to mount it
EXACT same thing happened to me... My pump shaft twisted in half & the gauge didn't read any different until about 3-4 miles down the road. Then it started going up & down. I shut the car off imediately & had already spun 3 bearings. Needless to say I bought an aftermarket gauge before the engine went back in. Those stock oil psi gauges do NOT work for sh*t.

Mine had 8psi at idle (400 rpm) & only climbed to about 35psi. Alot of 302's seem to have a low oil psi problem. My friends daily driver 5.0 has about 10psi at his 800 rpm idle & has had that psi for about a year & a half. No problems whatsoever. I replaced the bearings & had the crank reground. Never goes below 35psi now, even 35psi at 400 rpm.

From what I can tell alot of 302's have a low psi problem. Doesn't seem to effect them much.

You could try running a little thicker oil.

a high pressure pump can cure these infamous low pressure situations, im running a high volume pump right now because i couldnt find the HP pump with the lower cover that supports the internal gears like i wanted, but i ended up with REALLY high pressure anyways. Im not sure if i pinched my oil pressure gauge hose when i tightened the fittings up or if it has anything to do with a tight #1 cam bearing, but going from 15w40 rotella to 10w30 pennz didnt drop it more than *maybe* a lb or two.
