Default engine rebuild

Im rebuilding a 289 for my 88 stang . I had a couple questions . I knoew im going to beef up the rods i have a set of 302 off a 88 and 351 rods from a 70 will either work ? It will have a c 4 trans shou7ld i get a stal converter? I plan on pushin 400 + hp some day . I have a Edlebrok performer intake and carb a 600 cmf . I bought a set of gt40 heads the other day . I also have a Lunati LUN-61001LK cam intake is 213 exaust is 219 it has intake duration of 256 and exaust of 262 . Would this make a good combo . Also what kinda pistons should i use i have a set of dished pistons and a set of forged flat tops what would be best for this set up . Thanks in advance for the advice guys.

use the forged flat tops for better compression.......What is the power band on the cam and lift??? that'll determine the reccommended stall convertor...if you plan on racing it then yes get a stall as to what range?? need to know complete specs on cam...as for the rods.....remember 289 rods are longer than 302 rods.....5.155 to 5.090 so if you want the uniqueness of a 289..you'll need 289 rods and 289 crank as the stroke in a 289 crank is less than a 302's.....your set up isn't all aggressive and will be in the range of 250 to 260 rwhp and probably run mid to low 13's if you can drive and launch good......I have a simialar set up and run mid 13's with it

Your not planning to push 400+ with that setup? Or you planning on building a 351 later on for the car?Stall speed would depend on the cam you are going to use later on down the line and if you get one make sure to get a trans cooler also.

Ya, its usually a good idea to get a separate one, cools the fluid a lot better, then you just run the lines to that.

IF you are going to use 302 sized crank 3.000 stroke then 5.09 con rods for 302/5.0 you could go with these reasonably priced Forged pistons:
I think that your gt40 heads might have 64cc chambers that means
Part Number: KB719 these pistons give you 9.2:1 (flat-top)
I would go for the 719 based on duration of your cam
OR
Part Number: KB736 these pistons give you 10.1:1 (pop-up)

the 289 came with 5.155 rods
crankshaft 2.87" throw/stroke

opps i didnt notice that you said you ALREADY had pistons, I would like to know more about these pistons for best recommendation

^ same pistons will work with a 289

i used the federal mogul hyper flat tops, they are about 125 bucks with rings if you shop around, and will work great for a moderate build
