Crate or rebuild??

RE: Crate or rebuild??
You aren't going to be able to get a lot on that budget. I think you would be better off rebuilding what you have. Search locally for a good used set of GT40Ps and some sort of cam. If you are on a tight budget, someone is going to disagree, one of the letter cams is fine. It's better than stock. Then find a used Cobra or Trick Flow intake. Get the machine shop to set the heads up for whatever cam you get and find some used roller rockers. If you find a good shop and get these parts used locally so you don't have to pay shipping you will be close to your budget and have a good engine.

RE: Crate or rebuild??
thx 4 feedback. ok, some history on car, bought it new and has gone through 3 teenage girls for their first car. everything is still org and still in good shape. gonna repaint and wanna upgrade engine 300hp+. like i said b4 has 175k on engine, never was a real quick car but i do want to up the hp. have 8k to paint, engine build-up and interior. will do interior myself, everything else will done in a shop. what in your experience would be the best way to go. if need be i can go over budget at bit. what it to be sharp and quick when complete but not a car that has to tuned every other day.
thx..john

Projects can take on a life of their own! Could you divert some funds from the paint and interior to the motor? The stock motor would only be good for a .30 over bore giving you a 306 ci motor. The block would not be in temporary of splitting down the middle based on a 300 hp goal. You can buy crates 331 or 347's that will provide 400hp+ but it is going to cost you. If you go with a crate stay the H#LL away from DSS. Look into, FordStrokers.com, CHP, Bennett Racing, Kuntz & Co. Do not forget your local shops that could build you something as well. Just a suggestion.

Do some shopping at E-Bay for an intake and some heads.
Shopp online for lotsa stuff, save some $$.
Don't get me wrong, I still get lotsa stuff from Summit but they are not really the cheapest place to buy from........

RE: Crate or rebuild??
Don't forget about the transmission and rear. Neither will increase horsepower but will sure compliment whatever you decide to go with. Get a2500-2800 stalltorque converter, shift kit,and a gear.
