I worked at this dealer for four years. Got an offer at an Ace Retail Support Center as maint. for more money so I took it. He's never actually changed a gear set from failure. It's all the people bitchin about noise. Granted, some of them do whine but most don't. People complain over stupid stuff these days.

ORIGINAL: HACKGT350

i guess you got lucky we had to change gears in my manuel powertrain class and when the new gears went in nothing lined up right on the old shims it was also a gm rear
You just answered your own dispute....GM rear..

I did gears in my fox and my cobra...both got FRPP 3.73s and all new bearings. Both times the backlash was spot on.. And they dont whine either.

And since we are bringin up where we work and blah blah...I'm a tech at Ford, and I even had team leaders with 20+ years each tell me the same thing I just told you.

The only special tool you will need is the dial indicator just to check the backlash...Its easy to mix up left and right side shims when you are not careful.. Also, carefully cut off that pinion gear bearing so you can get to that shim and re-use it.

When you guys say to use the stock shims, do you mean the carrier shims or the pinion shim???

Carrier shims. Remember what side they came out of and put back in the same way.

when i did my gears i did that trick where i ground out the old pinion bearing so it would slide on, used the same sized original shim and assembled without crush sleeve, checked pattern and it was fine. then reassembled with new parts. no problems here either.
