Default Mass Air question

Will a mustang start without the mass air hooked up or if its bad? I wouldnt think so. Does anyone know how to test a mass air meter? Can you do it with a multimeter? What pins to check? Thanks

Man ran somewhat decent at idle, but then its runs like absolute crap when giving it gas. I remember one time i was resetting my idle and i thought i had it running perfect, then discovered my MAF was unplugged, and i had to start all over. sucks.
