Default odd turbo placement

i was watching two guys garage the other day as i was getting ready for work and they were putting a turbo on an ls1. the thing is they took the muffler off and bolted the turbo there all the way in the back and ran the intake hose all the way from the back to the tb. also, the blow off valve was on the exhaust side not the clear air side. is that normal?

just wondering if you guys have heard of this before and what you thought

Yeah, I've seen videos of turbo setups like that. Word on the street is that there isn't much lag at all...

dbeck i dont know much about turbos so im assuming thats what it is called. they said its to release pressure in the intake tube without the turbo slowing down to eleminate lag.

do they make kits like that for mustangs?

I didn't see the show, but I saw something similar to this in an Explorer forum. Is this http://www.ststurbo.com/how_it_works what you're talking about? I haven't tried it, but it is an interesting concept.

yes it was the wastegate, i think it would be about the same lag wise, but turbo lag is not much if you sizes it right for you application.

What I like about it:
The turbocharger is getting cooled more by the air passing & the oil is cooler by the time it reaches the turbo. This can also run higher psi before needing intercooled. & I like that the turbocharger is hidden.

What I don't like:
There is more dirt & debris back there. There is more lag in this system due to the turbo being so far away from the engine & the piping having to run all the way back to the engine bay. The exhaust has had more time to cool before it reaches the turbo so there is less power.

according to their website that's not true. They say that they use a fatty turbo with a smaller outlet on the turbine to compensate for the denser air doing the work, and an oversized compressor to create more boost to counter the lag created by the pipes. Actually, they say their pipes have similar volume to a traditional FMIC setup, but I'll have to see one to believe it. I was under the impression that thermal expansion is what made turbos so efficient, but their website seems to deny that.

I think it probably works, but I think a traditional setup would work better. My biggest gripe is having the air filter underneath the car - I drive in too much crap for that to be practical.
