Just take it to a shop and have them check it first. Hopefully you have no leaks and your not low on charge because they dont make R-12 anymore and would be so expensive if you found someone that had any. An MVAC license is required to work on it and when done converting to R-134A it needs to be pressurized with nitrogen to leak check it then you need to run a vacume pump on it before it can be charged back up. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help, I don't really feel like bringing it to the shop unless it's absolutely necessary. I hate the mechanics here, no offense to mechanics, but there are far too many who are either incompetent or who want to scam you, or both. It'll be hot this summer, but I'll live, my old Acura's a/c didn't work at all, I ripped out the a/c radiator and threw it away, waste of space, lol. That's what windows are for right?

Oh well, maybe later I'll have it converted to the new system, heard it was more efficient anyway, but not right now. Thanks.

BTW, don't lecture me, I'm aware that I'm not "supposed" to work on it myself, but half the people here in the forums have removed all smog/egr systems and/or has off-road h-pipe, all of which are illegal to do if you're driving on the road. And almost all of us, I bet even you who are doing the lecturing, speed while driving. So please, no lecturing necessary, dad.
