i have a 95 5.0 cobra with 92000 miles on it. i trailered it from ohio to nc. i've been here for 6 months spent every free penny i had and still nothin. also it is a 5 speed. sometimes it acts fine when cold othertimes its not. the rpm's in nuetral and under load are erratic. push the gas and the rpm's go up but keep droppin. i put new plugs, coil, wires ,cap ,rotor button, o2 sensors, battery, fuel filter, and it's still the same. also it is backfiring under load bad with a bad fuel odor. i did run it out of gas in ohio, and when i changed the fuel filter gas on the tank side was rusty colored. im down to timing and fuel injectors unless anybody can think of anything else

I'd sure like to know how you came to that concluscion???if you don't understand what can cause these symptoms then don't post misinformation.......anyway.....the first thing you need to do is run a koer/koeo test and see if any codes are present..backfiring as long as the thermactor air systemn is operational and the antibackfire and diverter valves are good.... is a result of excessive hydrocarbons/unburnt fuel reaching the hot exhaust and combined with the oxygen content already there, spontaniously combusts and wham the backfire occurs.....if a codes test yields nothing..try cleaning the MAF.....with maf cleaner purchased at any parts store and when a rich condition exists you need to hook a pressure tester up to the test port on the fuel rail and read fuel pressure to see if it's wirth in spec....a malfunctioning pressure regulator can cause your problem and pull the vaccum line to the regulator and see if it's wet with fuel..and go from there!!!

clean your MAF sensor by spraying on some electrical contact cleaner and make sure it is mounted straight up.

You said you ran it out of fuel once. Have you checked your fuel pump. My buddy ran his out once and the pump went to sh*t because supposedly the fuel going through the pump lubricates and cools the pump. Soooo no fuel phuked it up i guess. Just an idea.

dam I missed that, basicly you could of pulled all that sediment from the tank inside the pump.

Id do the MAF and drop the tank and pull pump, if it needs flushed, dump in some fresh gas and alchohol, run it around holding the tank and dump it some place safe.

I had the same problem with back fires under a load due to a vacuum hose off, or the timing could be set to high.

Just a silly thing I thought I'd add...

Make sure you run 91 or higher octane, the Cobra has a specific tune that requires it.

EDIT: doh I just saw that you fixed it [:@]nevermind, but what I said is still true.
