so why can't the ford dealership help???? or did you not take it into them and just called them on the phone and expected a free diagnostic over the phone??...first you need to run a koeo/koer test...if that yields nothing you need to check fuel pressure and make sure you don't have a ruptured fuel pressure diaphram and ypu need to get the cars temp gauge working or at least know whay temp the car is at to make sure the car is switching to closed loop operation

That's bullshiz!!!! they just don't want to work on older cars..they have the software..the real problem now a days is they don't have techs that are as familiar with pre odb II diagnostics.........but it 's not that hard..I'm at a independent repair shop and we have all the software to work on odb I vehicles like yours.....infact you don't need a scanner to even pull codes on yours here try this:

With the temp gauge not working, I would say either the wire is off of the sensor on the intake or the sensor itself is bad. Either way, the computer is going to always think the car is running cool, so it is going to be dumping more gas to the motor in an attempt to warm it up. Thereby creating the rich condition.

the temperature gauge in the car will have 0 effect on open vs closed loop operation of the efi system.......now on the other hand if the ect sensor on top of the coolant pipe connection were bad...it will affect closed loop operation..this is the two wire ect and not the 1 wire on the left front of the intake..........and dumping more gas into the motor in an attempt to warm it up???[sm=WTFsgign.gif]....the thermostat is the only device that'll help warm the car up...what will happen if the ect gives a false low reading the car will stay inopen loop fuel contol operation where all fuel calculation is based off a preprogrammed / determined ratio stored in the ecm......where as closed loop operation the a/f is calculated via live inputs sent to the ecm from various sensors such as o/2, mass air, ect, act ...ect ect........you do have one thing correct if ect is bad car will run rich resulting in poor fuel economy
