5th gear probs and tranny rattle

Ok, lately whenever I shift into 5th gear it grinds a little. If i try to shift somewhat fast(The clutch is pressed, i'm not an idiot) 5th gear will grind for a very short time and then it goes in easy with no problems afterwards. If i hold the clutch in for 2 or 3 seconds then put it in 5th, it goes is smoothly. I'm not sure if my clutch is going out, or if my 5th gear synchro is going out. I know the synchro went bad before and i had the tranny rebuilt. Then, my problem was it kept coming out of 5th and soon i had no 5th, but this time its different. I'm beginning to think its the clutch though. If its the tranny, then i'm going to get rid of this T5 and grab and TKO or something better.

And another question, sometimes, well most of the time, when i'm in 5th gear and going up an incline, no matter how steep, and moving at about 45mph it sounds like the tranny is rattling. It sounds like metal moving and hitting something, kind of like if the exhaust was bouncing around and hitting something, but its tight. any ideas on this???

thanks

it's either the sincro which is built onto the 5th gear hub or the brass blocker ring that fits in there...you'd have to pull it apart and look at the teeth on the sincro hub and see if they are mushroomed flat..if so hub/gear is toast....if the problem mis concentrated to just one gear then the problem is in that area..the clutch would affect the system as a whole and not just one gear usually:D:D

ok. Its not like a hard grinding. Its very soft but it still pisses me off. I don't understand why it does it when shifting somewhat fast, but then doesn't do it when i shift slow

on the 1st through 4th gears the blocker rings have a friction material on them and if they are worn some what then you wait a sec and then the hub and blocker ring material slowly grabs and stops assembley from spining to allow a smooth change when new they stop immediately and engage.....on 5th there is a brass blocker ring if the surface on the blocker ring is out of spec / worn it won't grab as well as quick as it should:D

today i noticed that the rattling occurs whenever i'm in low rpm's, from 3rd-5th. Any ideas on that one???

it's hard to guess without seeing it personally but mine will rattle a little but if it's excessive check all mounts like motor and trans tailshaft bushing for any play:D
