Slicks have no tread, the only way that they get traction is by spinning them and getting them sticky. Drag radials are pretty much street legal slicks, enough tread to make them DOT approved. If the radials are DOT approved you can take them anywhere and anytime you want and stay legal.

dr's are like a soft tire with minimal tread, compared to a slick with is SOFT and no tread, the closest thing to a street legal slick is the michey thompson et 1's, but i think your better off with a good drag radial, like the nittos or a mt et 2.

Not entirely true. You can get tickets for improper tires if you're not running m&s rated tires when traction tires are required. Not that too many people would be dumb enough to take drag radials out in the snow...

Btw, DR's are the way to go. You need some tred on the street because street asphalt is nothing like track asphalt which is prepped and much higher quality. Slicks wouldnt work as well because street asphalt is uneven at a microscopic level.
Another problem with slicks is they wont last nearly as long as drag radials. You can get less than 3,000 miles out of slicks with no burn outs. On my nittos I should get above 10,000.
Edit - These are nittos btw. 275 Drag Radials.
